No Cash

So Sam, how do you finance your trip?
Truth is, I don't.

This is a little something I decided to do sometime around September last year. I started to live and travel without using money and with the exception of bit of help from elderly fellows in Southern Italy and a tip from photo gig in Kosovo, it's worked quite well for over 6 months.

How do you get from place to place then??
Mostly I go out to the side of the road (or a fuel station in the EU) and stick out my thumb, sometimes I ask stopping drivers if they are going my direction and they take me for free, out of kindness, curiosity, need for some company or who knows. This process is called hitch-hiking.
I will usually take any car or truck going a good distance in my direction, but I give preference to cooler rides like: the ambulance in Macedonia, the army KFOR jeep in Kosovo, the vegetable truck in Montenegro, the speedy doctor late for a surgery in Austria, or the random driver who will invite me for a cup of coffee or to meet their family or anything unexpected that comes along.

Where do you sleep?
Mostly I use Couch Surfing, which has allowed me to meet most of the truly amazing and inspiring people in this trip. If you've never heard of it, check it out or send me a message so I can tell you more.
I also do a good deal of camping, sleeping outside when the weather is good, have slept a few times with the homeless in different countries who always helped me a lot and showed me where to sleep warm and get free food.

Yes, food. How do you survive?
We need a lot less comfort to survive and enjoy life than we think. You don't need to know what you'll eat tomorrow, just go with the flow (specially if you're Christian, it should be something very common to you). I have not planned my days or rationed my food and I have never gone hungry (never spent a full day without food). Maybe I'm lucky, or resourceful or maybe I just don't care what people think and will take food from strangers, work in exchange for it, dumpster-dive, finish other people's food at the restaurant or simply ask someone. I love to cook and do it wherever I can (specially outdoors when camping), but I've hardly ever in this whole time had to ask for food... it has usually come freely, mostly offered or invited to share.
Never hitch-hike on a full stomach, hitch-hiking is also an eating experience.

But do you get sick?
I have only been sick a few times and they've never been too bad, usually lots of water, tea and rest is what does the most for you. I stopped taking any medications or pills about 10 months ago I think.
